When Is the Best Age to Photograph Your Dog? (Puppy vs Adult vs Senior Guide)

If you’ve ever thought…

“I want photos of my dog… but when is the right time?”

You’re not alone.

This is one of the most common questions I get as a pet photographer—and the truth might surprise you:

There is no single “perfect” age. Every stage of your dog’s life is worth capturing.

But each stage does come with its own magic!

Puppy Stage (8 weeks – 1 year)

Puppies are chaotic, wiggly, and completely adorable.

This stage is perfect if you want:

  • Tiny features and oversized paws
  • Playful, personality-filled moments
  • That “they’ll never be this small again” feeling

What to expect:
Puppies don’t sit still—and that’s okay. The best images come from movement, curiosity, and real personality.

Adult Dogs (1 – 7 years)

This is what most people think of as the “ideal” time—and yes, it’s great.

This stage is perfect for:

  • Well-trained dogs who can follow commands
  • Clean, polished portraits
  • Adventure-style sessions (parks, lakes, etc.)

What to expect:
Your dog knows who they are at this stage—and it shows. Confidence, personality, and connection shine here.

Senior Dogs (7+ years)

This is the stage most people wait too long for—and it’s often the most meaningful.

This stage is perfect for:

  • Slower, emotional, connection-focused images
  • Capturing the bond you’ve built over the years
  • Honoring your dog’s legacy

As hard as it is to think about…

These are often the photos people treasure the most.

The Truth No One Talks About

There is never a “better time later.”

Dogs change fast.
Seasons change fast.
Life changes fast.

The best time? Now!

What If My Dog Isn’t Well Trained?

Here’s the good news:

They don’t have to be.

Some of the most beautiful images come from:

  • Movement
  • Real moments
  • Imperfect, personality-filled expressions

That’s literally what I specialize in.
